| A wonderful,
mature course built on chalk, with tricky undulating greens. |
|
The first hole is a 494 yard par 5. The fairway
is wide, treelined, and uphill all the way. There are two bunkers
about 100 yards from the green and three more around the green, the
one front right is especially mean. The green is quite small, and
as flat as they get.
A short par 4 comes next, 296 yards downhill to a large green. The
fairway is wide with only a few trees around, but that is not to say
this is an easy hole. The tee shot is blind, the green is raised and
well contoured, and the ground falls away sharpely to the right and
back, and there's a large green-side bunker front right. Did I say
it's out of bounds both sides?
Hole five is a real challenge, 460 yard par 4, SI 1. Out of bounds
on both sides, a blind uphill tee shot, the fairway then slopes downhill
and heavily left to right. There are no trees to the left, if you
try too hard to keep it on the high ground there's nothing to stop
you going OB. The fairway narrows toward the small undulating green,
and there are 4 bunkers between you and it.
The sixth is a 403 yard par 4, dogleg left, uphill then gently downhill.
Although it's treelined there is plenty of room, aim for the conifer
in the distance and let it go. After a reasonable drive you still
have the dogleg to play, but the only thing marking the coner is a
small tree with a walking stick. There are two bunkers short left
of the small square green.
A great looking hole from the ninth tee, 382 yard par 4, slightly
downhill dogleg left. There are four bunkers about 200 yards out angling
away from you left to right, cutting the fairway in two. You must
keep away from the left and take on the further bunkers. The fairway
narrows to a green surrounded by undulating ground and three sand
bunkers.
Ten is a very tough 424 yard par 4. You sometimes start from this
hole.
Hole thirteen is good a test of accuracy, a 147 yard par 3 with a
narrow raised green and five bunkers around the front.
The seventeenth is a great looking hole, a downhill 551 yard par 5.
From the tee all the bunkers are in view, two on the right then four
bunched between 104 and 110 yards from the green, and one more either
side of the green. Another small green with sloping surroundings.
Eighteen is a good finish, a 390 yard par 4, the fairway widens at
the apex of the right dogleg about 240 yards out. The best shot in
comes from the centre of the fairway. There's one bunker short right,
three further along on the left, and one more right of the green.
The ground falls away sharply left and back.
An interesting, challenging and well cared for course with good practice
facilities and a very nice club house and changing rooms. |
