| An 18 hole
course set in parkland, beside the Thames and Hampton Court Palace. |
|
Enclosed in a royal park this course has an abundance of wildlife
and plenty of space. A nice place to spend a few hours.
Although relatively flat, there is a lot of natural shape as well
as some severe ditches and mounds and a lot of well placed bunkers.
It's quite open, the fairways are generally not tree lined so the
wind is always a factor, but there are stands of trees in all the
right places to shape the holes.
There are plenty of long par 4's demanding a wood or long iron into
the green. All the par 3's are testing, the seventeenth is the easiest
even with all those bunkers.
The course starts with a good 399 yard par 4. there's a continuous
line of trees along the left, and a well placed bunker right to
catch the fade. The ground rises toward the green and there's a
wide fairway bunker 70 yards out so it's hard to judge the approach.
Hole 2 is a straight forward looking 348 yard par 4. From an elevated
tee to a wide fairway with a slight dogleg left to right. There
are no trees to define the dogleg and the danger lies in cutting
across the corner. The rough is punishing if you miss the fairway
on the right. There are 5 bunkers, one either side at driving distance
and 3 around the green.
The fifth is a 534 yard par 5, turning left to right. There's a
long bunker on the left 220 yards from the tee, but keep away from
the trees on the right or you'll be chipping out with a long way
to the green. The green is not as close as it appears due to a well
mown area in front.
Keep left on the 387 yard par 4 seventh as the green is tucked well
left. There's a bunker either side of the fairway at the 230 yard
mark but the trees and rough right is the main danger from the tee.
It's a two tier geen with a bunker both sides and rough all around.
Hole eight is a 160 yard par 3. The narrow green is above and sloping
toward you, and is protected by an array of bunkers to the front
and both sides.
The tenth is a tough par 4, 396 yards to a hard to find narrow elevated
green.
Hole eleven is a really birdie opportunity. A 302 yard par 4, with
plenty of room at landing distance, you can really open up leaving
a short one in.
The fourteenth is an interesting par 5, the fairway doglegs
right with a massive depression across the right side of the fairway
short of the green, making it hard to sneak one on.
Hole 16 is a tough par 4, 415 yards turning left to right with the
corner gaurded by a wide bunker, you need to place your tee shot
well and hit a good approach to reach this two tier green.
Seventeen is the shortest hole on the course, a 151 yard par 3,
but is totally surrounded by bunkers, and the green slopes heavily
back to front.
The eighteenth is a real challenge, a 438 yard par 4. With a long
bunker left and two on the right all around landing distance, you
need a long straight drive to have any chance of finding the green
in two. Then it's slightly uphill past five large bunkers across
the front of the green.
A really good test and a great days golf. |
