| Mature
parkland course with water, wide fairways, good greens and lots of
bunkers. |
|
Beverly brook runs through the course and
comes into play a number of times.
Starting with stroke index 17 par 4 with a straight wide fairway,
followed by a stroke index 15 par 3 of 159 yards, makes for a gentle
begining.
Hole 3 is a little trickier, there is a river across the fairway where
a great drive will take its first bounce and a good one finish. The
river is a bit further from you on the right and there is a large
bunker just short of the water on the left, it depends on the wind
but a fade is the safe shot. Past the water there are two more fairway
bunkers left and three more around the green, a tough 435 yard par
4.
Illustrated above, the 7th is a beautiful looking hole, from a large
raised teeing area the fairway narrows 150 yards out as large stands
of trees pinch in from both sides. A well placed tee shot will leave
a short iron/wedge across the brook to a green protected by willows
conifers and bushes close by, a bunker front left and mounds right
and back which makes the chip back on hard should you miss the green
long or right..
The hardest hole on the course, hole eight, 463 yard par 4. This green
is hard to reach in two, making it a virtual par 5 for most.
The 10th is the first of the three par 5's, there is an attractive
stand of trees on the left, willows along the right and a massive
bunker across the fairway to catch the faint hearted.
Eleven is a gentle dogleg right, there are two large bunkers on the
left of the fairway one after the other, a well placed tee shot is
needed here.
Across the river past the sentry of bushes to the 12th green.
The 13th looks very narrow from the tee, there are a pair of bunkers
short right and a large bunker long centre, there two more guarding
the front of the green. At 421 yards for a par 4 this is a tough one.
Hole 14 is the longest par 3 at 179 yards, as usual there are mounds
around the green and a bunker front left making for a small target
from the tee.
Fifteen is the longest hole at 491 yards, it's also the first of back-to-back
par 5's as 16 is par 5, the green is well protected with bunkers left
and right and a large pond close by the right.
The shortest par 4, hole 17 turns sharply left 200 yards out. There
are trees all down the left and a bunker at the corner. It's tempting
for the longer hitter to go for a big draw, but play into the corner
and it's an easy par 4 possible birdie.
The 18th has a wide fairway with a large bunker left followed by trees
jutting in from the left. Huge tower blocks in the distance are striking
as you walk down the last fairway
The greens are a good size, well tended, quite fast and subtlely undulating.
Your approach shot is often obscured by grass mounds and green-side
bunkers, making it much harder to judge for distance and position.
They are quite particular about dress code here. There is a good practice
putting green by the club house.
If anything it's a liitle bit flat, but there are some attractive
and challenging holes, an abundence of large fairway bunkers and green
side mounds, and with the brook running across many fairways as well
as fast shapely greens, it makes for a good round of golf. |
