| One of three championship
courses on the Wentworth estate. |
|
Teeing off from the first, standing outside the crenelated club
house on the elevated tee, next to the bronze statue. It's quite
exiting. This is stroke index 9, and for a shorter par 5 the small
raised sloping green is hard to find.
Hole 2, is a 150yd par 3, from a raised tee to a well elevated green
with a bunker on every corner and a large tree protecting the right.
Miss short you will run back down the fairway away from the green.
You are driving blind on the fourth, over a hill and right to left.
If you hit a good drive it will roll a long way down the hill giving
you a fair chance at the green for two.
Hole 6 has a narrow fairway, one of the shorter par 4's, a long
iron is enough, but there are fairway bunkers at 190 to 220yds out.
If you go with the driver you can get past the bunkers. It's best
to avoid the rough as the green is well protected to the front with
bunkers.
The 7th fairway is steeply downhill with a small stream at the bottom,
but you'll need a very good drive to reach the water. Keep your
tee shot left, let it slip right and your in rough ground and aqward
lies, and from there the green is protected by high trees and a
rather deep bunker. After the downhill drive the ground rises to
a two tier green.
There a quite a few small streams running through the course, but
hole 8 is the only hole with any real body of water. You will need
to drive well and keep it right for a comfortable second shot into
this shapely green.
Anything but a good drive leaves you playing the 450yd par 4 hole
9 as a par 5, but this is stroke index 1 so it might be a good strategy.
Raised greens are the norm here and the par 3 tenth hole plays much
longer than it measures due to the way the ground rises to this
green. Only one tiny bunker here.
If you can play a draw hole 13 looks very inviting. It's a dogleg left
and there is high ground on the right so you can get a good roll in the right direction. You need to keep a bit right though as the green is protected by overhanging trees and two bunkers from there.
Hole 15 is a very long par 4, the fairway is narrow and a stream
crosses it twice. the green is small with a bunker each side. If
you can keep it left off the tee you will have a better look at
the green, but there is a bunker on the left edge of the fairway
230yds out.
A dogleg left with a narrow sloping fairway, the par five 17th is
the longest hole on the course, also the only hole without bunkers.
The 18th is a par 5, a right dogleft, with a group of bunkers on
the left of the fairway at the turn. The fairway slopes down to
a small stream that runs across the course, well positioned to catch
any week second shots. The green is narrow with bunkers around the
front, mounds left and behind and sloping ground to the right.
A tough but fair test of your golf, play here any chance you get.
There is a halfway house by the 9th tee where you can get a good
hot or cold snack and the club house is worth a visit.
